Introduction of PEN Center Nepal

Efforts to establish PEN Nepal began in 1987, and it was accepted by PEN International in 1988. Formal recognition from the government of Nepal was sanctioned by the Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai after the success of the democratic movement in 1990. In 2000, it ran into difficulties because of the armed conflict in Nepal and once more formal government registration was secured in 2002. PEN Nepal was registered for the second time at the Chief District Office, Kathmandu on th 21st August of that year. At present, PEN Nepal has more than 50 members. Members are celebrated poets and writers within and outside the country and about 50 percent are women. All age, ethnicities, and genre groups are represented. PEN Nepal is interested in broadening its contacts and cooperation both bilaterally and multilaterally.

PEN Nepal gives priority to literary harmony amongst the cultures, values, beliefs and languages & literatures speaking & writing in Nepal. This literary institution is committed to protect and preserve the freedom of speech, democratic values and human rights.
